High-intensity discharge (HID) ballasts regulate the electrical supply to HID light sources including metal halide, high pressure sodium, and mercury vapor lamps. HID lamps cannot operate directly from line voltage; the ballast provides the high-voltage arc-starting pulse needed to ignite the lamp, then limits current during steady-state operation to prevent runaway. Selecting the correct ballast type, wattage, and voltage rating for the lamp in use is essential: a mismatched ballast will either fail to start the lamp or damage it prematurely.
HID lighting remains common in industrial and outdoor applications where high lumen output per fixture is needed and where the longer warm-up and restrike times of HID sources are acceptable. Warehouses, manufacturing floors, outdoor area lighting, street lighting, and sports facilities are typical HID applications. While LED has displaced HID in many new installations, a large installed base of HID fixtures continues to require ballast replacements for ongoing maintenance.
