Measure the outside diameter of the pole top or tenon the fixture will slip over. Roughly 2 7/8 to 3 inches means a 3 inch fitter, the most common size; 3 1/2 to 4 inches means a 4 inch fitter. If the fixture and pole do not match, a slip fitter adapter converts between sizes without replacing the pole.

A post top fitter slips over a vertical pole or tenon and is secured with set screws. A pier mount bolts to a flat surface such as a masonry column, entry pier, or deck post. Many fixture families offer both mounts on the same lantern, so pick the body style first, then the correct mounting base.

Pedestrian-scale post lights typically run 8 to 14 feet, with 10 to 12 feet the sweet spot for walkways and entry drives. Larger commercial sites push to 16 to 20 feet for wider spacing. Lower heights need tighter spacing and lower output per pole to avoid glare at eye level.

Type III distribution suits paths along a perimeter, since it throws light forward and along the walkway with little spill behind the pole. Type V works for open plazas, intersections, and courtyards where symmetric coverage matters. Full cutoff versions of both keep light out of the sky and off adjacent property.

Many are, but not all. Look for full cutoff optics that emit no light above horizontal, and choose 3000K or warmer where local ordinances apply. Traditional acorn styles with drop lenses scatter uplight; modern LED acorns reproduce the look with shielded optics that meet most dark-sky requirements.

Solar post lights work for wayfinding, monument entries, and remote paths where running power is impractical. Their output is well below wired LED post tops and depends on daily sun exposure, so they are not a one-for-one substitute for wired area lighting where uniform footcandle levels are required.

Most LED post top fixtures in this category accept standard 3 in or 4 in tenons, which keeps existing pole infrastructure reusable during an LED upgrade. If the pole top is nonstandard, an adapter usually solves it; replacing the pole is the last resort, not the first.

Distribution and Dark-Sky Choices for Walkways

Outdoor post lights earn their keep by putting uniform light on the ground, and the optic determines whether that happens. Type III distributions push light forward and sideways for perimeter paths; Type V throws a symmetric circle for open plazas and intersections. For campuses, parks, and any jurisdiction with outdoor lighting ordinances, choose full cutoff post tops that direct all output downward. Dark-sky compliant fixtures cut glare and light trespass complaints, and 3000K or warmer CCT is the usual ordinance ceiling. A decorative acorn with a drop lens looks traditional but scatters uplight; modern LED acorn optics deliver the same silhouette with controlled distribution.

HOA and Streetscape Replacements

HOAs and property managers replacing a legacy lamp post program face a matching problem: dozens of aging fixtures, one or two failed, and a discontinued model. The practical path is to standardize on a current LED post light that matches the silhouette (acorn, lantern, or contemporary flat lens) and replace in phases, starting with the failures. LED post tops cut energy use sharply against the high pressure sodium and metal halide fixtures they replace, and eliminate the relamping cycle that makes pole-by-pole maintenance expensive. Solar Post Lights

Solar post lights make sense where trenching power is impractical: remote pathways, monument entries, and retrofit sites without spare conduit. Be realistic about output; a solar post top delivers a fraction of the lumens of a wired LED fixture and depends on panel exposure, so treat solar as a marker and wayfinding layer rather than a substitute for wired area lighting.
