Capacitors and ignitors are critical supporting components within HID ballast systems, and they are among the most commonly replaced parts in aging HID lighting installations. Understanding the role of each component helps facility maintenance teams diagnose failures accurately and order the correct replacement parts without replacing the full ballast assembly.

Capacitors in HID systems serve two primary functions: in lag-type magnetic ballast circuits, they correct the power factor to reduce reactive power draw; in some designs, they also contribute to the starting sequence. A failed or degraded capacitor often causes a lamp to cycle on and off (known as cycling) or refuse to restart after a brief interruption, even when the lamp itself is still functional. Ignitors (also called starters) deliver the high-voltage pulse needed to strike the arc in HPS and certain metal halide lamps during startup. When an ignitor fails, the lamp will not start at all. Ignitors are lamp-type specific, so matching the ignitor to the correct lamp type and wattage is essential for reliable operation.

RelightDepot carries replacement capacitors and ignitors for the most common HID ballast configurations used in the field. For the full ballast assemblies that use these components, see our Metal Halide Ballasts and High Pressure Sodium Ballasts sections. To shop all HID ballast types in one place, visit the HID Ballasts parent category. Replacement HID lamps are available in our HID Lamps section.
