Masonry electrical boxes are designed for installation in concrete block (CMU), brick, poured concrete, and other masonry wall assemblies where no stud cavity exists for a standard box. Set into the masonry during construction or into a chase cut after the fact, they provide a flush, code-compliant wiring enclosure in wall materials that would otherwise require surface-mount conduit and exposed boxes.

Standard masonry boxes are single-gang and available in depths that accommodate standard conduit entry and device mounting requirements. Extensions, also called extension rings or mud rings, stack onto the face of the masonry box to bring the device face flush with tile, thick plaster, or other finish surfaces applied over the masonry substrate.

Masonry boxes are most common in commercial and industrial buildings, school construction, correctional facility projects, and exterior concrete wall applications. Most accept 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch conduit knockouts and are built from 16-gauge or heavier steel for structural integrity in masonry pours and high-traffic environments.
