Plastic electrical boxes are the standard wiring enclosure for residential and light commercial new construction where nonmetallic sheathed cable (NM or Romex) is the primary wiring method. Their lightweight construction and integrated cable clamp designs make them faster to install than metal boxes in standard stud-wall applications.

Single-gang, double-gang, and multi-gang plastic boxes cover the full range of device mounting needs, from standard outlet and switch locations to large multi-device plates. Old-work (retrofit) box designs with integrated mounting wings or side brackets allow electricians to add boxes to finished walls without opening the wall cavity. New-construction boxes with nail or screw flanges attach directly to studs and joists before drywall installation.

Plastic boxes are available in standard and deep-profile depths. Larger cubic-inch boxes are required when more conductors or devices share the enclosure, per NEC fill calculations. Many boxes include volume-adding features such as integrated cable guides and removable knockouts for faster rough-in.

For outdoor and wet-location device mounting, see Weatherproof Boxes and In-Use Covers. For commercial conduit applications, browse Metallic Boxes. View the full Boxes and Fittings catalog for all box types.
