Emergency lighting inverters convert standard line-voltage luminaires into code-compliant emergency fixtures without replacing the fixture itself. When normal power fails, the inverter switches the connected fixture to battery-backed operation, keeping the space lit for the duration required by NFPA 101 and local codes, typically 90 minutes at minimum illumination levels.

Inverter-based systems are common in retrofits and in applications where the existing fixture is too large or architecturally significant to swap out for a dedicated emergency unit. They're also a practical choice in spaces where a single inverter can drive multiple fixtures on the same circuit, reducing the number of battery packs you need to manage and test.

Key specs to check before specifying: input voltage range, wattage capacity, battery type (sealed lead-acid vs. nickel-cadmium), and self-test capability. Self-testing units log results automatically, which simplifies the monthly and annual inspections that NFPA 101 requires.

If you're outfitting a new install rather than retrofitting, see our Emergency Lights and Exit and Emergency Combo Units for all-in-one options. The Exit and Emergency Light Parts page covers replacement batteries and accessories for units already in the field.
