Metal halide ballasts regulate the power supply to metal halide (MH) lamps, a high-intensity discharge light source widely used in commercial and industrial lighting for their high lumen output and good color rendering. MH lamps require a ballast that matches their specific wattage, lamp type (probe-start or pulse-start), and operating voltage, as these parameters directly affect starting performance, lumen maintenance, and lamp life over time.

Probe-start metal halide ballasts use a third starting electrode in the lamp and require a magnetic ballast design. Pulse-start metal halide systems use a separate ignitor to deliver the starting pulse and are compatible with electronic and high-power-factor magnetic ballast designs. Pulse-start systems generally offer better lumen maintenance over the lamp's life and are the preferred choice for most modern MH applications. Common wattages range from 70W for accent and display lighting to 400W, 750W, and 1500W for large-area industrial and sports lighting.
