Emergency battery back-up drivers convert standard LED fixtures into code-compliant emergency egress lights without requiring a separate dedicated emergency luminaire. When utility power is interrupted, the driver switches to battery mode and powers the LED array for the 90-minute minimum illumination period required by NFPA 101 and the International Building Code. This approach simplifies the lighting layout because a single fixture handles both normal and emergency operation, reducing fixture count and wiring runs compared to a traditional emergency fixture strategy.

Emergency LED drivers are available in fixed-wattage and field-adjustable wattage versions. Fixed-wattage units power the full LED load in emergency mode, while adjustable units allow the installer to set a lower emergency wattage that extends battery runtime. Most units include a self-test function and a visible indicator LED for monthly and annual testing compliance required by the NEC. Battery chemistry is typically sealed lead acid or nickel-metal hydride, with service life ratings that should be factored into the maintenance plan.
