Where the NEC Requires a GFCI Outlet

For most remodel and tenant improvement work, the receptacle wins: resets happen where people are, and one device wired feed-through protects every standard receptacle downstream on the run. Breakers win for dedicated equipment circuits, dishwasher and disposal locations with no accessible receptacle, and new construction where whole-circuit protection simplifies the layout.
Grades and Features Worth Specifying
GFCI receptacles come in 15A and 20A ratings and install in a standard device opening. Current UL 943 listings include self-test circuitry that automatically verifies trip function and flags end of life, so self-test is the default on new product rather than an upgrade. Weather-resistant (WR) models are required in damp and wet locations, paired with in-use covers per NEC 406.9; find enclosures under weatherproof boxes and in-use covers. Tamper-resistant versions satisfy NEC 406.12 where it applies, and commercial-grade devices bring higher cycle ratings for daily-use environments. One naming note: the trades write GFI outlet, the code says GFCI receptacle, and both mean the device on this page.
