Receptacle orders go wrong at the NEMA line item: the equipment arrives needing a 6-20R and the wall has a 5-20R. The selector table below reads straight off the plug pattern, covers the 240V families, and keeps the spec honest before anything ships.

Read the code like a part number: the first number family sets voltage class, the second sets amperage, R means receptacle and P means plug. Match the receptacle to the equipment plug on the schedule and confirm the branch circuit rating with the electrician of record before the order ships.

240V Outlet Basics

The 6-series straight-blade patterns carry no neutral, so they serve straight 240V loads like compressors and window air conditioning. The 14-series adds a neutral for split 120/240V appliances, which is why ranges and dryers land on 14-50R and 14-30R. EV charging commonly reuses the 14-50R pattern on a dedicated circuit; confirm the charger manufacturer's receptacle and circuit requirements plus local code before speccing it. Locking L-series patterns twist to lock so vibration and cord tension cannot disconnect the equipment, which is why they own stage, shop, and temporary power work.

Commercial and Hospital Grade in Brief

Commercial and spec grade receptacles carry heavier contact material and higher cycle ratings than residential devices, and hospital grade adds the UL 498 green dot tests for ground pin retention required in patient care areas per NEC 517. The full grade education, including where residential grade is defensible, lives on the parent outlets page; this page keeps its depth on configuration.

Ordering Notes for Spec Projects

Five checks before a bulk electrical outlet order goes out. Confirm each NEMA configuration against the equipment schedule, not against memory. Verify tamper-resistant requirements for the occupancy per NEC 406.12. Hold electrical outlets to one color and finish per room schedule, with matching wall plates. Check box fill and gang counts against the device layout via boxes and fittings. And map GFCI locations per NEC 210.8 with the chart on our GFCI outlets page. Send the finished schedule and we will quote the receptacle package at contractor pricing, hospital grade and locking patterns included.

Frequently Asked Questions

The first number identifies the voltage and wiring family: 5 is 125V with ground, 6 is 250V with ground, 14 is 125/250V four-wire. The second number is the amperage, and the letter tells you whether it is a receptacle (R) or plug (P). An L prefix means locking. So a 5-20R is a 20 amp, 125 volt receptacle, and an L6-30R is a 30 amp, 250 volt locking receptacle.

Both are 125V grounded patterns; the 5-20R is rated 20A and adds a T-shaped neutral slot that accepts both 15A and 20A plugs, while the 5-15R accepts only 15A plugs. Spec the 5-20R where equipment carries a 20A plug or the circuit serves a single dedicated receptacle. On multi-receptacle 20A circuits, 15A duplex devices remain code-permitted and are the commercial default.

Match the equipment plug. Straight 240V loads with no neutral use the 6-series: 6-15R, 6-20R, or 6-30R by amperage. Appliances that also need 120V internally, like ranges and dryers, use the four-wire 14-series: 14-50R and 14-30R respectively. The plug pattern on the equipment nameplate is the deciding document; the receptacle, conductor sizing, and breaker all follow from it.

Yes, the 14-50R is the common receptacle for plug-in EV charging equipment, installed on a dedicated circuit sized to the charger. Confirm the charger manufacturer's requirements, since some call for industrial-spec receptacles rated for continuous load, and check local code for GFCI protection requirements on the circuit. Hardwiring the charger is often the cleaner choice for daily-use installations.

A receptacle that passes supplemental UL 498 tests for ground pin retention, blade grip, and physical abuse, marked with a green dot on the face. NEC 517 requires hospital grade devices in patient care spaces such as exam rooms and patient bedrooms. They cost more than spec grade and earn it anywhere an accidentally dropped plug carries real consequences.

Wherever an unplanned disconnection is worse than the cost of the device: stage and studio power, shop equipment, temporary power distribution, food service equipment on carts, and IT or medical carts. The L-series blades insert and twist to lock, so cord tension and vibration cannot pull the connection apart. Match the locking pattern exactly; L5, L6, and L14 families are not interchangeable.

Electrically, usually nothing; the difference is the face. A standard duplex has two round-shouldered outlet faces on one strap, while decorator (rectangular) devices present a flat rectangular face that pairs with matching plates and aligns visually with decorator switches and dimmers. Spec one style per project and hold to it, because mixing the two on one wall reads as a punch-list item.
