Emergency lights activate the moment a building loses normal power, illuminating exit paths so occupants can evacuate safely. NFPA 101 and the International Building Code set the floor: fixtures must provide 1 foot-candle average illumination along the means of egress for a minimum of 90 minutes after power loss. Most commercial-grade units exceed that baseline, and many now include self-diagnostic circuits that run monthly tests and annual load tests automatically.
