The baseline formula is simple: add the room's length and width in feet, then read that number as the chandelier diameter in inches. A 12 by 14 ft dining room points to a fixture roughly 26 inches across. Over a table, size to the table instead of the room; a diameter between one half and two thirds of the table width keeps the fixture proportional and clear of sight lines. Large volumes scale by height as well: figure 2 to 3 inches of fixture height for every foot of ceiling height, which is how a 20 ft lobby ends up with a 40 to 60 inch tall centerpiece.

NEC 314.27 requires anything heavier to be supported independently of the box or hung from a box listed for the load, so check the shipping weight against the box rating during rough-in, not after the ceiling is closed. Chandeliers in lobbies, banquet halls, churches, and multifamily amenity spaces raise questions no residential guide covers. Who relamps the fixture at 24 ft, and from what equipment?
