Disc lights and wafer lights are ultra-thin LED ceiling fixtures designed for direct surface mounting or shallow recessed installation without a traditional can housing. Their slim profile makes them the practical choice for concrete slab ceilings, existing ceilings with minimal plenum depth, and retrofit projects where cutting a new housing into finished drywall is not an option.
Most disc and wafer lights are sold as integrated LED units, meaning the driver and light source are built into the fixture body and not separately replaceable. That simplifies installation but means the entire fixture is replaced at end of life rather than just a lamp. For applications where fixture longevity and simplified maintenance matter, look for products with rated lifespans of 50,000 hours or more and solid manufacturer warranty support.
Common applications include hotel corridors, apartment common areas, retail back-of-house spaces, office break rooms, and any location where ceiling conditions rule out traditional recessed or surface-mounted luminaires. Color temperature selection (typically 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, or 4000K) and CRI rating (80 or 90) should match the surrounding fixture specifications in mixed installations.
