Outdoor Post Lights: Match the Fitter Before the Style
The most common reason post lights get returned has nothing to do with looks. The fixture arrives, the crew climbs the ladder, and the fitter does not match the pole top. Before comparing lantern styles, measure the outside diameter of the post or tenon the fixture will sit on; that one measurement filters this whole category down to the products that will actually install.

Most LED post top fixtures in this category accept standard 3 in or 4 in tenons, which keeps existing pole infrastructure reusable during an LED upgrade. If the pole top is nonstandard, an adapter usually solves it; replacing the pole is the last resort, not the first.
Distribution and Dark-Sky Choices for Walkways
Outdoor post lights earn their keep by putting uniform light on the ground, and the optic determines whether that happens. Type III distributions push light forward and sideways for perimeter paths; Type V throws a symmetric circle for open plazas and intersections. For campuses, parks, and any jurisdiction with outdoor lighting ordinances, choose full cutoff post tops that direct all output downward. Dark-sky compliant fixtures cut glare and light trespass complaints, and 3000K or warmer CCT is the usual ordinance ceiling. A decorative acorn with a drop lens looks traditional but scatters uplight; modern LED acorn optics deliver the same silhouette with controlled distribution.
HOA and Streetscape Replacements
HOAs and property managers replacing a legacy lamp post program face a matching problem: dozens of aging fixtures, one or two failed, and a discontinued model. The practical path is to standardize on a current LED post light that matches the silhouette (acorn, lantern, or contemporary flat lens) and replace in phases, starting with the failures. LED post tops cut energy use sharply against the high pressure sodium and metal halide fixtures they replace, and eliminate the relamping cycle that makes pole-by-pole maintenance expensive. Solar Post Lights
Solar post lights make sense where trenching power is impractical: remote pathways, monument entries, and retrofit sites without spare conduit. Be realistic about output; a solar post top delivers a fraction of the lumens of a wired LED fixture and depends on panel exposure, so treat solar as a marker and wayfinding layer rather than a substitute for wired area lighting.
