The string lights that survive a restaurant patio season are not the ones sold by the pallet for backyard parties. Commercial duty strands run heavier wire, molded sockets, and wet location listings because they hang year-round over paying customers. Before comparing styles, decide which duty class the project actually needs.

Spanning Outdoor String Lights: Guide Wire and Hardware
Strand wire is a conductor, not a structural member. For any permanent installation, and for spans longer than the distance between two adjacent posts, run a stainless or galvanized guide wire (catenary cable) between anchor points and attach the strand to it with cable ties or S-hooks every few feet. Anchor into structure, not trim: eye bolts or lag eyes into framing, masonry anchors into block or brick, and dedicated poles with concrete footings where no structure exists. Leave sag in the catenary; a drum-tight span concentrates wind load on the anchors. Max Run and Circuit Load: The Two-Minute Math
Overloaded runs are the most common failure on hospitality patios, and the math to avoid them is short. A 20 amp, 120 volt circuit supports 1,920 watts, and continuous loads are held to 80 percent, or about 1,536 watts. Count sockets and multiply by lamp wattage. A 100 foot strand with 24 inch spacing carries 50 sockets: with 11 watt incandescent S14 lamps that is 550 watts, so two and a half strands fill the circuit. Swap in 1 to 2 watt LED filament lamps and the same strand draws 50 to 100 watts, letting one circuit serve an entire beer garden. LED string lights also solve the end-to-end limit, since connected-run limits are set by conductor capacity relative to lamp load.
Shatterproof Lamps and Wet Location Listings
Over dining tables, bars, and walkways, specify shatterproof bulbs: LED filament lamps in polycarbonate or coated glass envelopes that will not drop shards when a strand gets knocked. Pair them with a wet location listed strand and gasketed sockets for year-round exposure. LED lamps run cool enough to sit near fabric canopies and umbrellas, a real consideration with incandescent globes. Warm CCTs in the 2200K to 2700K range deliver the bistro look most venues want.
