Occupancy sensors detect the presence of building occupants and use that signal to control lighting, HVAC, and other building systems automatically. In lighting control applications, an occupancy sensor turns lights on when a space becomes occupied and turns them off or dims them to a setpoint after a user-configured vacancy delay. This eliminates energy waste from lights left on in unoccupied spaces and is a core compliance strategy under energy codes including ASHRAE 90.1 and California Title 24.

Occupancy sensors use passive infrared (PIR), ultrasonic, or dual-technology detection. PIR sensors detect the heat signature of moving people and work best in smaller enclosed spaces with a clear line of sight. Ultrasonic sensors use high-frequency sound waves to detect motion through obstructions and around corners, making them effective in larger or irregular spaces. Dual-technology units combine both methods to reduce false-on and false-off events, which is important in high-visibility or occupied conference room applications.

Occupancy sensors are frequently installed alongside High Bay Lighting in warehouse and industrial applications, and many LED High Bay Fixtures include integrated sensor mounting options.
