The failure mode of an undersized grade is a receptacle that quits gripping plugs, and in a tenant space the labor to swap a failed duplex receptacle dwarfs the price gap between grades. Facilities that standardize on spec grade for every general-use power outlet rarely revisit the decision; facilities that cheap out revisit it one service call at a time.

Where the Code Dictates the Outlet

Three NEC sections drive most selections. NEC 210.8 sets GFCI locations, bathrooms, kitchens, outdoors, garages, and more; the full location chart lives on our GFCI outlets page. NEC 406.12 requires tamper-resistant receptacles across dwelling units and in childcare facilities, hotel and motel guest rooms, waiting areas, and similar occupancies where children are expected. NEC 406.9 requires weather-resistant (WR) devices with appropriate covers in damp and wet locations. Pull the code edition in force for the jurisdiction and cite the section on the submittal; inspectors respect a package that shows its work.

A One-Minute NEMA Primer

Most commercial general-use work runs on two configurations. NEMA 5-15R is the standard 15A, 125V electrical outlet found through offices and homes; NEMA 5-20R adds the T-slot neutral for 20A circuits serving equipment and small-appliance loads. A 15A duplex is permitted on a 20A branch circuit when the circuit serves more than one receptacle, which a duplex satisfies on its own.
