Product Spotlight: M Series Area, Flood, and Wall Lighting

Product Spotlight: M Series Area, Flood, and Wall Lighting

Outdoor lighting scopes usually pull from at least three fixture categories. A commercial site retrofit might need area fixtures on poles covering the parking field, flood fixtures mounted on the building structure, and wall fixtures at entry points and egress locations. When those come from different product families, the takeoff has more line items, the submittal touches multiple product lines, and the install crew works with different mounting hardware across the same job.

The MaxLite M Series has a single housing body that operates as an area light, flood light, or a wall fixture depending on the optic installed and the mounting selected. Field-selectable wattage and CCT, a built-in c-Max receptacle, and six mounting configurations let this family cover a full outdoor scope without splitting into separate product lines. For electrical contractors and facility managers running mixed exterior projects, that changes how the job gets quoted and sourced from the start.

Pro Tip: The M Series c-Max receptacle is installed at the factory. If controls get added to the scope after the fixtures are up, compatible c-Max nodes go in at the receptacle without reopening conduit or returning the fixture. Order the fixture now and add the controls node when the scope or budget allows.

Why Running Three Separate Outdoor Fixture Families Creates Problems

When an outdoor scope pulls area lights, flood fixtures, and wall packs from different product families, the procurement side gets complicated fast. Different lead times across those lines create scheduling risk. Different mounting accessories mean more items to track on the takeoff. And if a substitution is needed for one fixture type mid-project, it rarely carries across to the others without another submittal.

That fragmentation also creates problems once the job closes out. Facility teams end up with multiple spare-part SKUs, multiple replacement workflows, and the possibility that a reorder on one fixture type looks visually different from what was originally installed.

The M Series reduces that fragmentation. One housing platform covers all three outdoor applications. The optic and mounting determine what the fixture does, not the body. That means one vendor quote, one submittal package, and one fixture format for the install crew from the pole base to the building face.

Applications, Optics, and Wattage Range

The family covers 15W to 300W across three housing sizes, with field-selectable wattage and CCT across the line. All configurations carry DLC Premium listing. Standard voltage runs 120-277V, with a 277-480V high-voltage option available for larger commercial and industrial panel configurations. The table below maps each application to its optic selections and wattage range.

Application Available Optics Wattage Range CCT Options (K) Voltage
Area Type III Medium, Type IV Narrow, Type IV Wide, Type V Square, Type III Low Glare, Type V Low Glare 15W to 300W 3000 / 4000 / 5000 120-277V or 277-480V HV
Flood Narrow 4x4, Concentrated Wide 6x6, Soft Wide 6x7 15W to 300W 3000 / 4000 / 5000 120-277V or 277-480V HV
Wall Type III Medium, Type III Low Glare, Type IV Narrow, Type IV Wide 15W to 300W 3000 / 4000 / 5000 120-277V or 277-480V HV

Field-Selectable Wattage and CCT: What It Means on an Outdoor Scope

Field-selectable means the wattage and color temperature are set at the fixture before installation, not locked in at the factory during the order. An EC receiving M Series units on site does not need to verify that the right wattage model was pulled for each location. A parking lot pole, a loading dock flood application, and a building entry wall mount can all draw from the same inventory, depending on the optic and mounting ordered.

The wattage selectability also matters when the spec or scope is still being finalized at procurement. Most outdoor lighting specs set wattage based on a photometric layout done months before the project reaches rough-in. If conditions change in the field, selectable output gives the installer a way to adjust within the fixture without a reorder.

CCT runs at 3000K, 4000K, or 5000K. Where the spec sets CCT, the M Series covers all three common commercial outdoor selections. Where it is open, 4000K is the typical default for commercial parking and site lighting. 5000K comes up more often on industrial sites and security perimeter lighting where output and visual acuity under the fixture are the primary concern.

Controls Readiness and the High-Voltage Option

This Series includes a c-Max receptacle as standard. The receptacle accepts the full menu of MaxLite c-Max control nodes, which can be field-installed at any point after the fixture is up. Twist-lock receptacles also support compatible third-party control nodes when the project spec or the owner's existing control system calls for a different ecosystem.

For sites where the lighting panel runs at 277-480V, the high-voltage option handles that directly. Large commercial and industrial facilities, distribution centers, and campuses with 480V distribution frequently run outdoor fixtures from high-voltage panels to reduce circuit current and simplify wiring runs. The high-voltage option needs to be confirmed on the order, not after the fixtures arrive on site.

Battery backup is also an available option for outdoor egress and emergency applications. If the scope includes areas where egress lighting compliance is required, confirm whether battery backup must be specified at the time of order. Do not assume it can be field-added without verifying against the spec sheet first.

Mounting Options and What to Confirm Before You Order

The M Series supports six mounting configurations: straight arm, flexible arm, slipfitter knuckle, trunnion/yoke, surface mount for wall and canopy, and variable adjustable wall. On a mixed outdoor scope, different parts of the job usually call for different mounting types, but they all come from the same fixture family without pulling in a separate product line.

Before the purchase order goes in, confirm the pole tenon diameter on any slipfitter application. Tenon sizes on existing poles vary, and a mismatch between the fixture and the tenon means a change order and a delay. On retrofit projects where existing poles are being reused, that is a field measurement worth taking during the estimate, not after delivery.

The M Series lenses are field-changeable and rotatable after the fixture is installed. On a retrofit scope where the existing pole position does not align exactly with the new photometric layout, the installer can adjust the optic direction after the fixture is up without requiring a reorder.

Where the M Series Gets Used

The M Series fits the outdoor applications most commercial and industrial projects actually require. Area configurations cover parking lots, site lighting, roadways, and campus perimeter applications. Flood configurations address loading docks, building facades, and security perimeter coverage. Wall configurations handle building entries, stairwells, egress corridors, and covered walkways.

The wattage range from 15W to 300W covers small surface-mount applications at the low end and high-mast equivalency at the top. The 300W configurations replace 750W and 1000W MH/HPS fixtures on a direct-retrofit basis, which is a common requirement on industrial site lighting jobs where older HID infrastructure is still running.

On retrofit projects, field-selectable wattage and CCT give facility managers flexibility when replacing older HID or first-generation LED area and flood fixtures. The EC can match output to the existing layout without ordering a different wattage model for each location across the site.
